New mod for C&C: Generals - Zero Hour

Balance & AI Mod for Vanilla Zero Hour is a free-to-use game utility created by modder Boxhead78. Running this add-on fixes the base game without drastically changing the vanilla experience for the real-time strategy game Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour. Aside from bug fixes, it also reworks the AI behavior and even adds a couple of new sound effects.

If you’re looking for a slightly improved version of Generals - Zero Hour, then the Balance & AI Mod for Vanilla Zero Hour is a good place to start. You can also check out the Zero Hour Reborn Mod or the ShockWave Mod.

Smoother and more challenging vanilla

In gaming terms, vanilla refers to the original release or version of a game—something the Balance & AI Mod for Vanilla Zero Hour tries to retain all throughout. It rebalances the game by making changes to certain unit characteristics. For example, the Aurora bombers are no longer overpowered with reduced damage, and tank generals are buffed with infernal cannons. This adds a new layer to the strategy aspect of the game.

Another major change in the game is with AI. By reworking the AI opponents in every difficulty—Easy, Normal, Hard—players get a better sense of what each level is like. In the base game, the difficulty scaling is quite vague and is almost only differentiated by the command and building speeds of the enemy. With this mod, they are craftier and sneakier and seem to adopt a range of gameplay strategies.

Still, there are a number of imbalances and game crashing bugs from the original game that remain unfixed through this mod. Even worse, this add-on comes with its own set of issues that can cause your game to freeze or crash. One particular example is when you try loading the mod for multiplayer games and it blocks you for apparently being a mismatch.

A basic add-on for Zero Hour

Some players want entirely new content in their mod while others are only looking for slight modifications or fixes, and Balance & AI Mod for Vanilla Zero Hour is a good example of the latter. It improves your gameplay experience for the 2003 RTS classic. It has more challenging AI opponents scaled properly to make it more appealing for players of different skill levels.

PROS

  • Reworks AI opponents with better scaling
  • Rebalances the factions from the base game

CONS

  • Comes with its own bugs and issues
  • Not advisable for multiplayer games
